External Affairs Minister of India Shri S.M. Krishna, accompanied by a high-level delegation paid an official visit to Uzbekistan on 22 and 23 October 2009. EAM called on Uzbek President His Excellency Mr. Islam Karimov on 23rd October 2009. Status of bilateral relations, after successful visit of PM Dr Manmohan Singh in April 2006 to Uzbekistan, was reviewed and it was noted with satisfaction that two meetings of Inter Governmental Meetings had been held since steering the bilateral relations forward. It was decided to give further impetus to agreed of bilateral cooperation (hydrocarbons sector, mining sector, etc) and explore new areas of cooperation. EAM also conveyed India’s willingness to cooperate in areas of agriculture, tourism, railways, road construction, transport and IT. It was noted that relations between India and Uzbekistan rested on strong historical and cultural foundations and had manifested into vibrant and mutually awarding bilateral relations since 1991.
During official talks between EAM and His Excellency Mr. Vladimir Norov, Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan, issues discussed included trade & economic cooperation, educational and cultural exchange programmes, science and technology and relaxation in visa policy. Both the Ministers expressed satisfaction on growing relations and cooperation between the two countries. Matters of regional and global importance were also discussed. The Indian side proposed setting up India-Uzbekistan Round Table with representatives of government and non-government agencies with a mandate to discuss new ideas to enhance bilateral relations. Indian side also proposed gifting of medical equipment and supplies worth US $ 1 million for hospitals in Uzbekistan. EAM also offered to upgrade Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Information Technology established in Tashkent in 2006 with Government of India development assistance. EAM also reiterated commitment in establishing the Entrepreneurship Development Centre in Uzbekistan with Government of India development assistance. During the visit, the EAM placed a wreath at the memorial monument of former Prime Minister Late Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri in Tashkent where he breathed his last in 1966. EAM also attended a reception hosted by Prof.(Dr.) Syed Manal Shah Alquadri, Ambassador of India to Uzbekistan, for the Indian community.
